Once.

Morning dawnings, and evening settings,

Liminal of yearning, in haunted shadows,

Colors shade, settling in pitch black throws,

Then rekindled, each hue an ember that glows --

Stirred my heart with morning light and song.

Once,

The winds of Sunday billowed in my sails,

The hope of Easter now dims, and pales.

Once and again, eyes clear, light fissures in,

When tethered truths slip their sordid bonds,

When my soul, in wandering dark, desponds,

To the beckoning of beauty and truth responds,

With a breath, then a sigh of darkening hope.

Once,

The bread and wine were the body and blood,

The Spirit now desolate in the fire and flood.

Still, in holding her hand at the breaking of day,

Still, I and Thou, a world of touch and of gaze,

Love of God's love -- pray, set my soul ablaze,

A candle in the dark, burning in beatific gaze.

One bond decries despair in the valley of death.

Once,

Our violence nailed a Palestinian Jew to a tree,

Water and Spirit aflood. Dying and living in Thee.

Once,

Once again.
